 Coaching Staff

We have a highly trained, caring coaching staff with a combined 47+ years of experience.  Their experience ranges from teaching swimming lessons, to collegiate coaching, all with impressive swimming careers of their own, including Olympic Trials Finals.

If you have questions related to workouts, meets, goal setting or other swimming related needs, please contact one of the coaches.  For all adminstrative related questions (dues, policy issues, etc.), please contact one of the Board members.

  

Coley Stickels
Head Coach

Coley was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska and attended N.E. Creighton Preparatory High School, class of '96. At the University of Arizona, Coley graduated cum laude in English/Media Relations in 2001 and moved on to Dartmouth College, where he studied Liberal Arts and Science.

Coley's personal swimming awards include: 14 time NCAA All-American, USA National Team Member 1999-2001, World Championship Finalist (Hong Kong 1999), NCAA Silver Medalist, 1st Team Academic All-American and Olympic Trials Finalist (semi's 50 free).

While at Hillenbrand, Coley coached 4 swimmers who have since gone on to be a NCAA All-Americans and Olympic Qualifiers, as well as one 2004 Olympian. At Dartmouth, the men's sprinters broke 3 school records that had stood since 1983.

Coley coaches the elite age group swimmers as well as the Senior program. Since joining LOSC in 2003, Coley has coached LOSC to 65 state records, over 100 Top 16 times, and its first National Age Group records (2) in 2008. Coley was recognized by the American Association of Swim Coaches (ASCA) as one of the Age Group Coaches of the Year for 2006-2007.  In 2008, Coley received his ASCA Level 5 certification. 


  

 Kim Hay
Head Development Coach/Head Administrative Coach

Kim Hay hails from Coos Bay, Oregon where she began swimming competitively at the age of nine. In high school, Kim was team captain and MVP her senior year. A graduate of Oregon State University, Kim swam all four years and all events, favoring the 100 & 200 breast stroke and 200 & 400 individual medley.

With 15 years coaching and 27 years teaching, Kim brings experience and enthusiasm to the Lake Oswego Swim Club. In addition to coaching at the Tacoma YMCA, LaSalle High School, Lake Oswego High School, and River Place Athletic Club, she started the Lake Oswego River’s Edge Athletic Club’s first swim team, a feeder team for Lake Oswego Swim Club. Coach Kim's coaching philosophy is to make swimming fun and to pass on invaluable life skills: teamwork, leadership, and time management, 

Kim has been coaching the novice squads for LOSC since 2002 and currently has her own swimming business including various pools in the area.
  


  

Alan Capron
Age Group Coach

A Northwest native, Alan Capron attended high school at Hudson’s Bay High School in Vancouver, Washington. After high school, where he was voted team captain and Most Improved Swimmer, he was a walk-on member of the University of Washington Varsity Swim Team. He swam all four years and was a member of the Pac-10 championship squad each year from 1988 to 1992. His favorite events were the 200 butterfly and the 1650 freestyle. 

Post college, Alan has held several coaching positions including the Husky Swim Club (Seattle), Bellevue Club Swim Team and Chinook Aquatic Club where he had many successes including: Top-16 swimmers, state HS champions, and Junior National Qualifiers. In 2001 Capron began coaching the UW Varsity Swim Team under Head coach Mickey Wender. During his two years the team set a total of 30 new varsity records. 

New to the LOSC this season, Coach Alan sums up his coaching philosophy with the “Triple T’s”: technique, training, and toughness. He is looking forward to getting to know his team this season and beyond.

 


 

  

Amber Wahlstrom
Coach

Amber is an accomplished swimmer. She swam competitively for the Tigard-Tualatin, Lake Oswego and Tualatin Hills Swim Clubs since she was 8 years old. During her career, she placed first at the State Championships in 6 events and qualified and swam for several Western Zone and Senior Sectional Teams. Amber also earned three varsity letters while swimming for the very successful Tualatin High School Swim Team. She was the high school district 9 champion in the 100 backstroke during her junior year.

Amber's love of swimming has continued beyond high school. She took classes to become a certified lifeguard and swim instructor. Amber worked as a swim instructor for the Tigard/Tualatin School District and, most recently, for the Tualatin Country Club. She enjoys working with kids and helping them improve their swimming technique. Participating in the sport of swimming has provided Amber with self-discipline, a strong work ethic and good character.
